When piping up a heating system do you pay much attention to which side of the rad. you take the flow and return to. As to say if you were fitting trvs on the left of the rad you'd take flow to the left side of every rad. Or just get a flow and return to every rad and don't bother about which side they go to and fit bio-directional rad valves.
 
all the same side from new and i normally do it right trv, left lockshield with drain off
 
i always try and keep flow on left and return on the right, but thats just my ocd and expensive ways.
 
It depends what furniture is being fitted and access to the trv for me, would normally go trv on the left otherwise.
 
The TRV valve should be on the side of the rad which is most open and center to the room, not blocked in by furniture or future furniture or in a corner,

This means if a complete new system then each rad will have the flow to that side, so no set side although with Bi directional valves it shouldn't matter too much, and drain off lock shield on every rad downstairs unless its a fancy collum radiator or such

trust you to confuse the issue with another alternative, someone will probably raise the issue of remote trvs now :)
 
Most of us are right handed, so that's where I put the the wheel head or TRV as that is the natural place to use your right hand if approaching a radiator straight on.
Thats if no other reason not to, such as furniture or position in room etc
 
ok my house is half and half flow to the trv on half the rads and flow to the return on the other half. Although I didn't fit it.
 
But it all still works if you get a flow and return to every rad? Sure people on price won't follow there pipes to get flow to the trv/right on every rad. As it will some times mean crossing pipes.

With bi valves it doesn't matter if just doing rad changes still work
 
So when piping up it isn't essential I get the flow to the trv side on every rad. Just it means cross pipes and speed is of the essence were I work at the moment.
 
Though. You wouldn't necessarily need the flow on the right as long as bio directional rad valves are used?
 
Aren't most rad valves bio functional now so flow and return can go to either end of the rad and fit the trv all on the right if furniture allows?
 
Quite possibly. Probably down to individual makes. Drayton and Danfoss are both fine for me.
 
I have heard though that some TRV's even though they are bi-directional can be noisy on the return side.
Is that bunkum?
How many have you fitted, and how many have failed. Quite a lot don't do what they say on the tin
