oil
An oil is any nonpolar chemical substance that is composed primarily of hydrocarbons and is both hydrophobic (does not mix with water, literally "water fearing") and lipophilic (mixes with other oils, literally "fat loving"). Oils are usually flammable and surface active. Most oils are unsaturated lipids that are liquid at room temperature.
The general definition of oil includes classes of chemical compounds that may be otherwise unrelated in structure, properties, and uses. Oils may be animal, vegetable, or petrochemical in origin, and may be volatile or non-volatile. They are used for food (e.g., olive oil), fuel (e.g., heating oil), medical purposes (e.g., mineral oil), lubrication (e.g. motor oil), and the manufacture of many types of paints, plastics, and other materials. Specially prepared oils are used in some religious ceremonies and rituals as purifying agents.
I have an oil heating system, and also I have an open coal fire , the coal fire also heats the water through a back boiler and a neutralising tank , when the coal fire is on the water starts boiling, the only way i can stop it is to put the oil central heating on to circulate the water, is their...

Hi all,
I am looking some advice regarding our renovations. We have just bought an old house circa late 1930's. We are looking to switch from oil to gas for various reasons one being the showers are electric.
My question specifically regards a back boiler in one of the fireplaces. We have had...
Hi guys, I'm relatively new to oil and have a question regarding S/ES and H/EH nozzle patterns. I know that the ES/EH are specifically for kerosene but otherwise it appears that an S and ES are interchangeable. This has me wondering if its necessary to carry both, as it seems pointless to be...
Hi there. We have recently moved into a rental. We told our landlord and he says he can't smell anything.
The boiler is in our spare room which we were going to make our due baby room in September. But I'm not too keen on putting baby in that room the smell it is only apparent when boiler is...

Hi everyone - Recently bought a house which is currently heated via FHW via an oil-fired boiler. Hot water is also provided by the boiler (via a tankless coil inside boiler). There are gas lines at the street, and the gas co is willing to bring gas into my house & install a meter for a $1000...
Hi again. Having successfully solved my secondary problem it’s now time to reconsider the primary fault.
my boiler smells of oil, not always but usually.
system is 25 years old and boiler is serviced annually. Metal tank in garden with Atkinson tank-master tap. Trianco boiler in utility room...
Hello,
My heating is coming on when the clock is off and typically this has been a motorised valve failed but i have checked both valves, (i believe both replaced in last two years and the manual levers are solid i.e closed). Now what is strange is that full heat gets to the radiator closest to...
Hello alll,
I have a firebird combi oil burner with the riello burner rdb in. It was working perfect up untill yesterday where it's going straight into instant lockout and won't do anything. Not fuel related because I can see it squiring out.
Any guesses to what it could be ? Thank you
Hi all,
I have recently run out of oil - the sensor in my kitchen is faulty so we’re completely empty. I’ve topped up my tank today to tide me over until delivery but my boiler (grant vortex eco wall hung) is still in lockout. I’ve read around and think I need to bleed the air from the system...
About 12 days ago attended a boiler lock out. Apparently another plumber was there a week before to and adjusted the photo cell. ..
It is a grant wall 16/21 about 10yrs old. The ones where there is no room to move ...! Doesn't look like serviced much. Opened up and heavily sooted. Bottom baffle...
Hi everyone-im a first time poster and after some info on what type of boiler to fit to my repiped house.
I have an old large house which has currently got a 70kw oil boiler with a single pipe system and pipework is approx 4 inch threaded steel-mega inefficient with school type radiators-the...
Was at a house today and their new oil boiler was installed in a pretty shoddy fashion.
Aka Plastic tiger loop screwed to the boiler casing.
And the main thing was really untidy pipework. Thrown together with a pile of grey plastic push fittings and copper / plastic pipe mix. For example...
Hi i hope someone can help, a couple weeks ago boiler was not staying on so i thought i would check rads and i bled them and it fired up and was working for a couple of weeks. Now it fires up and cuts out after about 5 mins. I changed the 2 port valve as pretty much every year this fails. Still...
Hi,
We have just had a grant oil combi boiler installed and we have two options to heat our hot water; we can have the water on continuously which will keep the very small water reserve in the boiler at a certain temperature. Or we can have the hot water off and then just boost it when we...
I have a new Grant Vortex 15/26 oil boiler installed.
It has a boiler thermostat with no numerical information, just a wedge graphic and covers about 1/3 of a turn.
I wondered if anyone could give an indication of what the range of temperatures is likely to be (I don't want to set the boiler...

Worcester Danesmoor 20/25, about 18 years old. B11 burner.
We came home a few days ago to find our boiler in lockout, and not wanting to restart, instead simply doing a pitiful whine. We called an engineer out yesterday who, after a quick diagnosis, worked out that the capacitor had gone. We...
Hi All,
I have a Worcester Danesmoor 20/25 oil boiler which is causing me lots of heartache and grief. About 3 months ago it locked out and wouldn't fire up when reset so I called out the local (but recently retired) engineer to see what he thought. He thought it was the pump so he serviced the...
